Rare Antique FRENCH Napoleon III MEERSCHAUM Mourning Relic Saint BERNADETTE Glass Dome Cover Wood Frame-m-bern

From our Meerschaum Collection....

This is an incredibly rare Mourning Relic From Lourdes , and is one of the earliest examples of its kind. These particular commemorative were sold by street vendors wandering through the crowds of mourners after Marie-Bernarde Soubirous passed away on the 16 of April 1879 .

These beautiful if somewhat crudely made reliquary were designed to hold a small pouch of earth or a relic on the nail beneath the plaster depiction of the death of Bernadette.

The ebonized wood leaf bears a domed glass insert with a plaster depiction reading Mort De Soeur Bernadette , Which means Death of Sister Bernadette , with her body at rest in
Nevers .

This is a superb museum quality display piece with some of the original paper backing present, which most likely held an account of the apparitions of Lourdes and a commemorative to the sister herself later canonized to Saint Bernadette.

The frame measures 6.75" by 3.25", Meerschaum is 1.5" by 2"

The detail is amazing!
